Scholarship Benefits

The RMIT University 2025 Research Stipend Scholarship offers a comprehensive package of benefits to support students throughout their studies:

  1. Stipend: Recipients will receive a tax-exempt annual stipend of $35,886, pro-rated for part-time study, and subject to annual indexation. This stipend is designed to cover living expenses, allowing students to dedicate themselves fully to their research.
  2. Tuition:
    • International Students: Eligible for an RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) or RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS), which covers tuition fees.
    • Domestic Students: An RTP Fee Offset Scholarship will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the candidature.
  3. Relocation Allowance: A one-off relocation allowance of up to $1,540 is provided to cover moving expenses for the recipient, their partner, and children. This support helps ease the transition to RMIT University for students who need to relocate.
  4. Leave Provisions: The scholarship includes provisions for paid sick leave, maternity leave, and parenting leave, subject to the scholarship terms and conditions. This ensures that students can manage personal and family commitments without compromising their studies.
  5. Scholarship Duration:
    • Doctoral Degrees: The scholarship is awarded for a standard duration of three and a half years of full-time study.
    • Master’s Degrees: The scholarship is granted for a fixed duration of two years of full-time study, with no extensions.

Note: The duration of the scholarship may be adjusted for candidates who have previously undertaken research studies at the same level.

Eligibility Requirements

The RMIT University 2025 Research Stipend Scholarship is awarded based on a competitive selection process that considers academic merit, research potential, and relevant experience. Priority is given to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  1. Academic Excellence: Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic performance, typically evidenced by a high distinction (80% or above) in their most recent studies or equivalent qualifications.
  2. Commitment to Research: Applicants must be able to commit at least 12 months of full-time study (or the equivalent) to the scholarship. Those who have already completed a higher-level research degree are not eligible.
  3. RMIT Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll at an RMIT Australian campus and meet the university’s English language proficiency standards.
  4. Compliance with Scholarship Rules: Applicants must not have previously held a Commonwealth-funded or RMIT research scholarship unless it was terminated early. Additionally, they must not be receiving another award that exceeds 75% of the value of this scholarship.

Specific Eligibility Criteria

  1. Part-Time Study: Part-time scholarships are available for domestic applicants under exceptional circumstances, as outlined in the Research Scholarship Terms and Conditions. Note that part-time scholarships are not tax-exempt.
  2. Current Students and Transfers: Applicants who are current students or transfers must have at least 24 months remaining for a PhD or 12 months for a Master’s by Research to be eligible.
  3. Ineligibility for Stipend: Applicants who hold a Research Doctorate or equivalent are not eligible for stipends for a Master’s by Research. Similarly, those with a Research Doctorate or equivalent are ineligible for stipends for Doctoral studies.
